MONROE - A 35-year-old Monroe woman was allegedly sexually assaulted by a man who offered her a ride home from a local tavern early Saturday morning.

According to a Monroe Police Department news release:

The woman reported that the suspect in the assault offered her a ride home from a tavern in the W5200 block of County KK at about 1:30 a.m. After a short ride, the suspect allegedly parked the vehicle in the 2900 block of 13th Street, in an alley between a gas station and a Laundromat and forced the woman into the back seat and assaulted her. The suspect then allegedly dropped the woman off downtown and she called the police from a gas station.

The suspect is described as a black male in his early 20s, 6-feet tall with a slim build. He was reportedly wearing a white T-shirt and blue denim jeans. He was driving a silver four-door car of unknown make and model.

"At this point it's not someone that was known to the victim," Monroe Chief of Police Fred Kelley said. "The fact that this is a stranger is not a common thing."

There have been more than 10 reported cases of sexual assault with use of force since 2009, Kelley said.

The woman sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Monroe Clinic ER.

Police are seeking information in the case. Anyone with knowledge of the assault, or knowledge about any of the persons involved, is encouraged to contact the Monroe Police Department at 608-329-2400 or Green County Crimestoppers at 1-800-I-C-CRIME.
