Plows pulled off Green County roads; Wisconsin 81 closed, then reopened

MONROE - In an unprecedented move, Green County Highway Commissioner Dallas Cecil pulled the snow plows off the road due to continued snowing, blowing and drifting.

Cecil took the plows off the road around 11:30 this morning and said the plows will stay off the road except in the cases of emergencies.

"They'll be off the road until we get better results than what we're getting now," Cecil said.

The plows will only go out when called upon by the Green County Sheriff's Department to help clear specific areas of the roadway.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin 81 was closed for about an hour from Argyle to County Y just west of Monroe due to an accident and a semi blocking the highway. The highway was closed around 11:45 a.m. as Green County Sheriff Department deputies and emergency crews responded to the scene. Both lanes of traffic were reopened about 12:45 p.m.

Cecil said this is the first time he can remember pulling the plows off the road.

Snowplows had been out since 4 a.m. to try to clear the roads but snow and winds continued throughout the morning, covering the areas plowed almost as soon as the trucks went through.

Lafayette County Highway Commissioner Tom Jean said he doesn't plan to pull the plows off the road in Lafayette County.

"I'm not saying we won't but right now I don't want to lose what we've been able to do," he said. "We know there's a lot of people who are trying to get where they need to go."
