Plenty of construction work in store for Square

MONROE - Visitors to downtown Monroe next week will be getting a real sense of how the city has planned to keep business alive during the reconstruction of its historic Square.

The Square's retail shops, eating establishments and many professional services will be accessible, and Monroe Main Street reminds customers that only one corner of the Square is blocked, and that traffic still can move all around the Square.

The Monroe Main Street Task Force and Block Captains received an update Friday from the contractor regarding the likely schedule for downtown streetscape work during the week of June 15.

E & N Hughes Company plans to install a new water main on 17th Avenue north from 10th Street toward 9th Street, complete the required disinfection of this main and the one installed June 11 on 10th Street, and make connections to the existing system. New service laterals to adjacent buildings then will be installed.

Hughes also plans to install storm sewers in this north-east section of the Square, primarily on 10th Street.

Toward the end of the week, removal of sidewalks and associated coal bin work should begin, starting mid-block on the east side of the Square and moving north. This work will include installing new water services to each building and filling coal bins with gravel.

Each section of sidewalk removed will have any exposed coal bins filled before the end of the work day, keeping businesses accessible most all the time.

As the contractor prepares for work on the coal bins, Main Street Task Force block captains will notify businesses as soon as possible, so that any last-minute preparations can be made by the businesses for their customers.

It is the intention of Fehr-Graham & Associates, E&N Hughes, the city, and Monroe Main Street that work in front of the businesses be completed quickly and foot traffic restored within a few hours.

After this preparation work, forming and pouring the sidewalks can begin.
