Pilot injured when plane flips on landing

BRODHEAD - An out-of-state pilot was injured during a landing Friday at the Brodhead airport when the nose wheel of a homebuilt experimental RV7A aircraft he was flying collapsed, according to Mike Weeden, president of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 431 in Brodhead.

The plane overturned after its landing gear collapsed, Green County Sheriff Randy Roderick said in a news release. The pilot, William R. Fisher, 58, Jackson, Tenn., was shaken up and had some scratches. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital for observation as a precaution, Weeden said.

The plane received damage to its canopy, tail section, wing and landing gear, Roderick said.

The plane appeared to be traveling with another similar aircraft which was not involved in the mishap.

Weeden was called to close down the runway. Two other people manned the airport radio to communicate with pilots who had radios in their planes.

But Weeden said not all aircrafts have radios. Wearing a reflective vest and florescent paddles, Weeded said he had to wave off one airplane.

The airport was closed for about 20 minutes.

The Brodhead Airport's annual Pietenpol/Hatz Fly-in event takes place July 23-25, but Weeden didn't not know whether the pilots were coming to the event or just arriving for a visit before the fly-in at Oshkosh next week.
