MONROE - Parkside Elementary School has a new acting principal but the district is mum on why Eric Huinker is no longer serving as principal.
Huinker had been principal since last summer. He replaced long-time principal Jim Brunette who retired last June.
Beth Ableman-Bernet is now acting principal at the school and has been since early last week, Superintendent Larry Brown said Monday. His comments were in response to questions from the Monroe Times regarding why Ableman-Bernet was listed on the district's website as Parkside's principal.
"I'm not commenting further," Brown said of the apparently sudden change, saying it was a personnel issue. He did confirm that as of Monday, Huinker was still an employee of the district but is not acting as principal.
It's also unclear if Ableman-Bernet will remain as acting principal at Parkside come fall. She has held a variety of positions in the district over the past two decades, including teaching special education, fourth and sixth grades, and Title I Math. Last summer, she was named dean of students/lead teacher for Monroe's virtual school and has been working in that capacity for the district since then.
Huinker had two more years left on his contract. Brown said the school board in January approved administrative contracts through June 30, 2012.
