Parks department seasonal programs open for registration

MONROE - Registration for spring and summer programs starts the week of March 10 at the Monroe Parks and Recreation Department.

The brochure for programs will be mailed to all Monroe city and rural residents that week. Registrations must be mailed in or in person.

Programs include:

Fitness Fun, Games and Tumbling is for boys and girls, ages 4 through 8. The program is for children who want to keep active with games, tumbling and fitness fun. The program will be held from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Mondays, from March 17 through April 28 in the gym at Northside Elementary. The fee is $25 for residents and $35 for non-residents. Openings are still available.

Spring Volleyball League will be held from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. for third- through fourth-grade boys and girls and from 4:15 to 5 p.m. for fifth- through sixth-grade boys and girls. Practices and games will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursdays at Northside Elementary. The program will be held from March 27 through May 8. There will be no volleyball on April 10. There will be a league for third- and fourth-graders that will be combined for one league and one league for fifth- and sixth-graders. The fee is $30 for residents and $40 for non-residents. Instructors are Savannah Koester and Allison Wojta.

Spring Try It Day for Engineering for Kids will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 5 at the Community Center. Those who attend can see what the new engineering programs are all about. The program is taught from a company in Madison. There is no cost but registration is required. Those who attend will be able to see the programs Lego Robotics, Electronic Game Design, and the engineering of power and energy. These programs will be held during the summer but are being showcased during the event.

Little League Baseball is for third- through sixth-grade boys. Registration for little league ends Friday, April 4. Little league is a parent/volunteer coached program under the direction of Parks and Recreation. Registration begins early due to the organization of volunteer coaches and meetings before league play begins. Practices start in May, and will be held during the week and weekends depending on the coach's preference and availability. Coaches meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 30 at the Community Center. The American League, for boys in third- through fourth-grade as of June 2014, will be held from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. Games will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The National League, for boys in fifth- through sixth-grade as of June 2014, will be held from 6:45 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays from June 4 through July 16, with a tournament to follow. Games at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The fee for both leagues are $30 for residents and $40 for non-residents.

Ballroom Dance Lessons will be available from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, from March 24, through April 14 at the Monroe Behring Senior Center. Ballroom dance lessons include: the fox trot, waltz, swing, polka and the schottische. The class is limited to 12 couples. A partner is needed to sign up. Those who are interested in participating but do not have a partner, can call 608-329-2460. The class is for adults. The fee is $50 for resident couples and $60 for non-resident couples. Instructors are Gil and Judy Oberdas.

Registration for girls softball ends Friday, April 4. Girls softball, for grades fourth through eighth, is a parent/volunteer-coached program under the direction of Monroe Parks and Recreation. Registration begins early due to team organization and the coaches meetings. Those who want to register after the April 4 deadline, should call the parks and recreation department to see if there are any openings. If shirts have been printed, it will be an additional $15 to have a shirt printed.

Coaches meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 23 at the Community Center. The Junior League is for fourth- and fifth-graders as of June 2014 . The league will be held from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. Mondays. The league will be held June 2 through July 21, with a tournament to follow. The Senior League is for girls in sixth- through eighth-grade as of June 2014 and will be held from 6:45 to 8 p.m. Mondays from June 2 through July 21, with a tournament to follow.

For both leagues, practices start in May and are held during the week and/or on weekends depending on coach's preference and availability. Games will be held in Monroe and with out of town teams. The cost is $30 for residents and $40 for non-residents.
