Parks and Rec still has open spots in some youth programs

MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department has a few openings in some upcoming programs.

• Spring Kickball/Dodgeball/Gaga Ball for boys and girls currently in grades 1 to 5 will be held Tuesdays from May 2-30 at the middle school field. Students will be divided into two groups by grade. The cost is $15 for residents and $25 for non-residents. The program is designed to get children outdoors, active and have fun. Instructors will be Matt Skibba and Paige Bittner.

• The Skateboard Clinic is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. May 21 at Honey Creek Skate Park for ages 7 and up. No cost to participate, but participants must register with Park and Rec office. Rain date is June 4.

• Summer School Afternoon Club is offered at the Monroe Middle School after both summer-school sessions from noon until 5 p.m. The first session will be June 19-July 7 and the second session will be July 10-28. Each day, children will eat lunch and check in with their Afternoon Club instructor. On Mondays and Fridays, children will stay at the middle school for arts and crafts, games, speakers, special entertainment, go to the library or play outside. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, they will walk to the pool after lunch and play at Swiss ALPS Playground. On Wednesday, they will take a separate bus to one of the city parks. This program is for children entering 5K through sixth grade in the fall. The cost is $200 for one session and $400 for both sessions. The price includes a snack provided by the Park and Rec Department. Instructors will be Monica Crook, Jolene DeNure, Anna Latimer, Emily Benzschawel, Isaac Allen, Gabe Witt and Cole Murray.

• Tot Lot is a class for 3- to 5-year-olds that includes songs, crafts, games, stories and playground activities. Sessions will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays to Thursdays at Northeast Park. All children participating must be toilet-trained. The June session is full, but there are openings in the July 10-27 session. Each session is $70 for residents and $80 for non-residents. Maximum enrollment is 20 children per session. Instructors are Kirsten Vetterli, Ben Latimer, Lauren Hlubek and Lexi Hilliard.

• Friday-only Tot Lot is offered from June 9-July 21 at Northeast Park from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. There will be no Tot Lot on June 30. The cost is $35 residents and $45 non-residents. Maximum enrollment is 20 children per session.

• Summer Dance will be on Mondays from June 19-Aug. 7 at Behring Senior Center. There will be no dance on July 3. Three classes will be held Ballet I (3- and 4-year-olds) from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m.; Ballet II (4- and 5-year-olds) from 5:50 to 6:20 p.m.; and Ballet III (6 years and up, advanced) from 6:25 to 6:55 p.m. The cost is $40 for residents and $50 for non-residents. Instructors will be Kajen Medenwaldt and Sadie Szabelski.

• Summer Karate is from June 6 to Aug. 24. It meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at Behring Senior Center. The youth session is for 7- to 12-year-olds and meets from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Adults ages 13 and older meet from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $45 for residents and $55 for non-residents. There is a $5 discount for each additional family member. The instructor is Timm Burns.
