MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department is offering a spring terrace tree planting program.
Residents who would like a tree to be planted on the terrace should come to the office to pick out a tree and pick up a flag. Tree orders for the spring planting are due April 8. The red flags need to be placed by April 17, marking where the tree is to be planted on the terrace. Planting will begin the week of April 24.
Trees available for the spring planting include London plane tree, $75; regal prince oak, $72; hackberry, $75; Turkish hazelnut, $85; and state street maple, $78. Low-growing trees available are ivory silk lilac, $65, and Cleveland select pear, $60.
The cost listed for the London plane tree, regal prince oak, hackberry, Turkish hazelnut and state street maple is one half the regular cost of the tree. The other half is being covered with a 2017 Department of Natural Resources Urban Forestry grant.
The price of the tree includes the Parks Department planting, staking, mulching, fertilizing and watering the tree at the time of planting. The homeowner is given information from the nursery on care after planting. The trees are guaranteed for one year and will be replaced at no cost. These trees are only for city residents and can only be planted on the terrace.
Several items to consider when ordering a terrace tree: If there are overhead utility lines over the terrace only a low-growing tree may be planted. On corner lots at street intersections, no tree shall be planted in the triangle formed by measuring 30 feet from the intersection of the curb lines of each adjacent street. Spacing between new trees should be a minimum of 25 feet. The terrace width should be a minimum of 4 1/2 feet. No tree can be planted within 25 feet of a fire hydrant. No tree can be planted nearer than 10 feet from a water stop box.
There will be a fall 2017 terrace tree planting program also.
Stop at the Parks and Recreation Department to get a flyer with the different trees that are available and pick up a flag to put out on the terrace. The department temporarily is located at 1064 5th Avenue, across the street from PDC.
