Park and Rec registration for classes, leagues open

MONROE - The Monroe Park and Recreation Department is taking registrations for classes and leagues.

Young Rembrandts Art classes are for children in kindergarten through seventh grade. The next session will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 23 and 30 at the Park and Recreation office. The cost is $30. The class is designed to give children a solid foundation in drawing.

Guitar lessons have two session dates: Tuesday session dates are May 7 through May 28 and Thursday session dates are from May 9 through May 30. Times for both classes are from 6 to 7 p.m. or 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Those who participate should bring their own guitar to class. Classes are held at the Craig Tuttle Music Studios, 2520 13th Ave., Monroe. The cost is $50 for residents and $60 for non-residents.

The sixth annual skate board clinic, hosted by Monroe Area Skatepark Enthusiasts (MASE), is from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 19 at Honey Creek Skate Park. Registration is from 12:30 to 1 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, June 2. A safety helmet and pads are required to participate. Monroe Clinic is sponsoring helmets and pads for the first 20 youth registered by today, May 6.

The Kiwanis Baseball League is for children entering kindergarten through third grade. Those who participate should register by Friday, May 31 to get requested t-shirt size. Practices will be in June and games in July.

Lassie Softball is for girls entering kindergarten through fourth grade. Registering is due by Friday, May 31. Lassie Softball is an instructor-based program. The first three weeks, the instructors will work on drills to help develop throwing, hitting and fundamentals of girls softball. The last four weeks the instructor will divide the children into teams and they will play games reinforcing the skills they were taught.

The next session for karate will be from May 28 through Aug. 22. Karate is a continuous program, meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays at the senior center. Ages 7 through 12 will meet from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. and adults ages 13 and older will meet from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. New students and white belts should attend the first week. The cost is $40 for residents and $50 for non-residents.

The Tot Lot program is a playground program for 3- through 5-year-olds. The program includes songs, crafts, games, story time and playground activities. Class are from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday. The June session is from June 10 through June 27. The July session is July 8 through July 25. The cost is $65 for residents and $75 for non-residents.

Friday Tot Lot runs from June 14 to July 26. Tot Lot programs are held at the Twining South Shelter. The cost is $30 for residents and $40 for non-residents.

Adventure Club is for children ages 5 through 9 years old. The club is held from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday and Wednesdays at Recreation North Shelter. The class includes crafts, games, special entertainment and going to the pool. Sessions are from June 10 through June 26 and July 8 through July 24. The cost is $30 for residents and $40 for non-residents.

Summer School Afternoon Club is a program that children can come to right from summer school classes. The program is held at the Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays. The kids will go to one of the parks on Fridays if the weather permits. On Tuesday and Thursday, children will be going to Recreation Park to swim at the pool and play outdoor games. Session dates are June 13 through July 3 and July 8 through July 26 from noon to 5 p.m. The cost of $175 per session.

One-day programs will be starting the end of July through August. They include Belle's Tea Party, Touch a Truck, Down on the Farm, Soda Pups and Spa Day.
