MONROE - Nancy Albertson is more than just an employee at Harris Ace Hardware in Monroe.
She's also known as "The Paint Lady."
"Oh, no, you don't really want to take my picture," she laughed when asked to pose for a photo Saturday.
Her laugh is infectious and her smile is warm as she explains her job behind the paint counter at the hardware store.
"I've been working here for eight years, Feb. 12," she said. "Before that I worked 11 years at True Value on the Square."
Albertson's experience is why people come to her with questions about what colors to use and how to get some of the more difficult colors they want for their walls.
She can create any color displayed on the paint cards at the store. There are too many colors to count. For example, each color has at least five different shades.
The key is to get it right for the customer, she said.
"When they ask for a color, I can mix it up for them right here," she said.
She uses the paint cards to determine what color she needs to make. Using a computer, she has a "recipe" of what paints to mix to create the color she needs.
There is one other important piece of advice she needs to remember, she said, with a laugh.
"Just make sure the lid is on the mixer."
Normally, people don't paint as much in the winter. The demand for paint hasn't decreased much this winter, so she's kept busy, she said.
"The paint has changed," she said. "With oil paints, people usually didn't paint much in the winter because of the smell. With latex paint, they can," she said.
With temperatures warming up, more and more people soon will be looking for the paint they need to paint either inside or outside.
And they'll come to Harris Ace hardware to meet "The Paint Lady" to get the exact color.
She's looking forward to being even more busy over the next few months.
"I enjoy being with the people," she said.
