BLANCHARDVILLE - An Oregon man suffered critical injuries Friday when the motorcycle he was driving collided with a deer on County Highway H between Blanchardville and New Glarus.

Douglas P. Jewell, 47, Oregon, was traveling east when his motorcycle hit the deer in the W8800 block of County H in the Town of York. Jewell was ejected from the motorcycle and received critical injuries, according to the Green County Sheriff's Department. Jewell was not wearing a helmet or eye protection, and the motorcycle sustained moderate damage.

Sheriff's deputies along with Blanchardville EMS and Fire Department were called at 8:13 p.m. Jewell was transported to the UW Hospital in Madison by ambulance. Responders had called for a UW-Madison Med Flight helicopter to transport Jewell, but an approaching thunderstorm kept the helicopter grounded.

Authorities closed Highway H for about 30 minutes, and the road was reopened at about 9 p.m.
