ORANGEVILLE - CoreFX Ingredients is expanding its facility by adding a 10,000-square-foot warehouse building. The addition comes at a time of expansion for the operation that employed just nine people a few years ago and today employs 42.

"It will help streamline us and make our operation more efficient," said Frank Furgal, CoreFX plant manager. "We broke ground (in October) and hope the project will be completed by March 2018."

The business, which specializes in custom dairy and lipid ingredients, hired Freeport's Winter Construction to build the expansion.

"When they came to us they wanted to do a design build," said Scott Winter, lead architect for Winter Construction. "We worked with them on schematics and we did some careful planning. The hope is that in the future to turn the space into a processing location."

In 2016, Irish company Ornua purchased MCT Dairies and renamed the business CoreFX. Ornua is Ireland's largest exporter of dairy products, and the CoreFX headquarters are now located in Chicago. According to Jeanne Kelly, Ornua's head of corporate communications at the time of the deal, Ornua's purchase of MCT Dairies was about $5 million.

Furgal said the new warehouse is one of several projects Ornua has lined up for the Orangeville operation.

"We don't know how many more hands are needed until the work flow is all figured out," Furgal said. "We are still looking for qualified individuals of all sorts. Maintenance technicians, QC (quality control) techs - we've made upgrades in the lab and are now doing the majority of testing in house. This is a huge growth phase. There's a lot of things happening all at once."

Winter wanted to get the foundation laid, "before the snow flies."

"It's a simple box, 100 by 100. But there is some careful detailing for the future," Winter said. "We're excited to partner with another manufacturer in the region. And we're using local subcontractors. We want to keep it all in the community."
