One dead, one injured in IL head-on crash

FREEPORT — One Illinois driver was killed and another critically injured in a head-on collision in rural Stephenson County early Saturday, Aug. 24.

Caitlin Robinson, 21, Rockford, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to a release from the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office.

The other driver, 19-year-old Amya Fleming of Freeport, was taken to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. According to the Freeport Journal Standard, Fleming is currently in a medically induced coma and no charges have been filed against her.

Fleming was listed in critical but stable condition as of Wednesday morning, Lt. Bradley Curtis reported.

The accident happened at about 6:15 a.m. on Afolkey Road near East Mill Road, about four miles southeast of Orangeville. Fleming was southbound in a Toyota Camry when it crossed the centerline and hit Robinson’s Mercury Mariner SUV.

Deputies arrived to find one vehicle on fire and both drivers entrapped. Bystanders and first responders attempted to extricate Fleming and Robinson.

The cause of the accident remained under investigation.

Assisting Stephenson County deputies at the scene were the Cedarville Fire Department, Leamon’s Ambulance, Tri-District Ambulance Lifeline Helicopter, Illinois State Police and the Stephenson County Coroner’s Office and Highway Department.
