TOWN OF PLYMOUTH - The suspect in a Wednesday morning fatal shooting in rural Rock County is being treated for a severe self-inflicted gunshot wound at a Madison hospital, Sheriff Robert Spoden said.

Deputies were called to a home at 6707 W. Stuart Road in the town of Plymouth at 8:18 a.m. for a report of a shooting. Plymouth is southeast of Orfordville in western Rock County.

Deputies think a man in his 70s shot and killed a female acquaintance in a shed on the property. He then went into another shed, Spoden said. When deputies arrived, they surrounded the shed. They heard a gun shot and think the man shot himself at that time, Spoden said.

A woman in her 50s was found dead of a gunshot wound, Spoden said. Deputies entered the other shed and found the male suspect with a severe gunshot wound, he said.

The man was transported to University Hospital, Madison, with deputies to guard him, Spoden said. He was being treated, and Spoden did not know the man's condition early Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities will schedule an autopsy for the victim. Deputies on Wednesday afternoon were processing the crime scene, Spoden said.

They also were working with the families of the suspect and victim, he said.

"It's just a very unfortunate set of circumstances," Spoden said. "It's just an unbearable burden they have to deal with today. It's very tragic for everyone involved."

Spoden said in a news release at 3 p.m. that the scene was secure, and there is no reason for residents to be fearful of their safety.
