MONROE - State Assembly Rep. Todd Novak retained his seat in the 51st Assembly district after a close race Tuesday.
Incumbent Novak narrowly defeated Democratic challenger Jeff Wright, garnering 13,912 votes, 51 percent of the district's votes, to Wright' 13,189 votes.
Novak said he expected a close race.
"Last time I only won by 65 votes, so I knew coming in I had to work hard," Novak said. "And I'm glad to say I did."
Novak said his connection with the district edged him out above Wright.
"Many of the bills and laws I've passed have directly benefited the district," Novak said.
However, Novak said he respected his opponent and praised him for his strong campaign.
"Jeff was a great guy, a great opponent and he had some great ideas," Novak said. "And we'll definitely work on implementing some of his ideas going forward."
Wright was unavailable for comment.
