MONROE - Green County native Craig Nolen has announced he is running to succeed long-time district attorney Gary Luhman, who plans to retire at the end of his current term.

Nolen will run as a Republican in the fall.

Nolen has spent the past five years as assistant city attorney for Monroe and has been working in private practice with Voegeli, Ewald & Bartholf Law Offices S.C.

"I really enjoy prosecution and holding people accountable," Nolen said. "I'm glad to be standing up for values in Green County. I take a lot of pride in that."

A 2003 Monroe High School graduate, Nolen was raised on his family's farm in the Town of Monroe and currently resides there with his wife and three children. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 2007 and from Marquette University Law School in 2010.

He said his primary focus as Green County DA would be drug abuse and mental health problems; to that end, he said he is committed to implementing a drug court in the county to work with human services to address "our growing drug epidemic.

"I want to help get people off the path of self-medication," Nolen said.

Drug abuse could be effectively reduced through working with state legislation, Nolen said, adding he already has good relationships with state Sen. Howard Marklein and Rep. Todd Novak, which should aid in his mission. In his capacity with the city, Nolen has spent his time as chief prosecutor for first time operating while intoxicated charges and underage drinking violations.

According to a news release, Nolen in 2014 appealed a case on behalf of the city of Monroe to establish that a parent must either supervise or control their child under the age of 21 when consuming intoxicants in City of Monroe v. Koch. Last year, he was the prosecutor for a case in which two dogs attacked and killed a smaller dog. Nolen reached a settlement with the dogs' owner to have them euthanized following the incident.

The fall primary election will be Aug. 9; the general election is Nov. 8.
