SOUTH WAYNE — What began as a call on Wednesday about a man with a gun near a Lafayette County school ended with an arrest for disorderly conduct but no weapon.
According to police reports, the initial 911 call came in just after noon to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s office on Aug. 17. Simultaneously, a call went to the Green County Sheriff’s office about a man fearing another man with a gun was after him near the entrance to Black Hawk School in South Wayne.
Deputies from Lafayette County responded along with “many other law enforcement officers,” said a statement from Lafayette County Sheriff Reg Gill.
Police said school staff made contact with a man outside the school who then fled to the nearby South Wayne Mart. That’s where police caught up with the 911 caller, 27-year-old Dustin Crego of South Wayne, who was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.
A police investigation determined there was no man with a gun and no threat, Gill said. He called the unified response “tremendous.” The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office was provided assistance from the Argyle Police Department, Darlington Police Department, Shullsburg Police Department, Benton Police Department, Blanchardville Police Department, Green County Sheriff’s Office, Stateline Area Narcotics Team, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, South Wayne Fire and First Response and Green County EMS.
