MONROE - Monroe Middle School was placed on "lock-down" for about 45 minutes Thursday while K-9 units from the Monroe Police Department conducted a scheduled drug search.

The building search began at 8:30 a.m. and yielded no drugs or drug paraphernalia, the Monroe School District said in a news release to media. All areas were searched, the district said, adding it would not talk about specifics of the search due to confidentiality issues.

During the search, no students or staff were allowed to enter or leave classrooms. The search was part of a complete school safety program that includes instruction, guidance, literature and assemblies, among other things.

"It is the responsibility of our parents, guardians, educators and local law enforcement to make sure our message is clear regarding anything that compromises the safety of our children. We will not jeopardize the well-being of our students," the district said in the news release.
