NEW GLARUS - After 10 years as police chief in New Glarus, Steve Allbaugh has decided to retire.

Allbaugh, 55, told the village board of his intention June 28.

"I just decided it was time to step down," Allbaugh said. "I've enjoyed working in New Glarus and I like the people I work with."

Before becoming the police chief in New Glarus, Allbaugh worked for the Green County Sheriff's Department for 15 years. Prior to his time with the sheriff's department, he worked as a police officer in Platteville for seven years.

The accomplishment he's most proud of over the past 10 years is the relationship between the police department and the community.

The police department worked with the schools to start a Drug Abuse Resistance Education program in the school and also giving students backpacks at the beginning of the year. He said the department has had a close relationship with the school district and he expects it to continue after he leaves the department.

Allbaugh was also instrumental in starting the Shop with a Cop program in Green County. Every year around Christmas, children in need from across Green County get to shop for presents with officers from county police departments and deputies from the Green County Sheriff's Department.

Albany Police Chief Bob Levitt is co-chairman of the program and he will take on the program full-time.

Allbaugh plans to take a job with Covance Research Facility in Madison as a security guard.

The New Glarus Public Works/Public Safety Committee will discuss the timeline to replace Allbaugh at its at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the village hall.

Village Administrator Nic Owen was out of the office Friday and not available for comment.
