WOODFORD - Woodford residents will be able to tour their new fire station in a few weeks.

The station, which cost $150,000 to build, will house the village's four trucks and provide a meeting room for the 20 volunteer firefighters who serve the village.

The fire station the department uses now served the village well when it was first built in 1953, but the fire department has grown, Fire Chief Scott Fischer said.

"We have to slide across the seat (of the truck) to get behind the wheel," Fischer said. "The old fire station was built when they had one truck."

The current station doesn't have a meeting room or any place firefighters can use for training.

Woodford Fire Department serves about 35 dwellings in the community and about 475 people.

Fischer, who has been the fire chief for two years and with the department for 12 years, said the department has stayed within its budget and the new station will not add to the tax levy.

Volunteers helped put in insulation, room dividers and drywall to help keep down the building's cost.

There will be an open house at the new department, located across from the Woodford State Bank, Aug. 9. The department will host its annual steak dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day at the station. Fischer expects the building to either be completed or just about completed.

The cost for the dinner is $12 for adults and $6 for children.
