A new voting system sits in the basement of the Green County Courthouse on Thursday. The county is leasing 23 new voting systems, including one that is handicapped accessible, for a total of $55,000 a year. Individually, a system costs around $8,500. County Clerk Mike Doyle said the county will assess each community $2,000 for election costs, which includes the use of a voting machine. The system optically scans ballots, an upgrade from the current system that is 15 years old and beginning to fail. Paper ballots will continue to be counted and saved, Doyle said, but having each optically scanned provides an extra level of security. More than 100 ballots went missing from the city of Monroe in the August 2014 primary; the new system safeguards against such a scenario, Doyle said.
