MONROE - The City of Monroe reminds voters that even though the new photo ID law for voting is not being enforced for the spring election/presidential primary, voters must still show proof of residency, if voting in Wisconsin for the first time, in order to register and vote on Election Day.
Also, when registering, voters are required to provide their driver's license number or Wisconsin ID number if they have been issued one. New voters may no longer register using a corroborating witness.
Anyone who has moved or changed their address since they last voted will need to re-register. Voters must have resided in a ward for at least 28 days before voting in that ward.
The following documents constitute acceptable proof of residency if the document contains the elector's current and complete name and current and complete residential address. These are the only documents that may be accepted for proof of residency:
- A current and valid Wisconsin driver's license.
- A current and valid Wisconsin identification card issued by the Department of Transportation.
- Any other official identification card or license issued by a Wisconsin governmental body or unit.
- Any identification card issued by an employer in the normal course of business and bearing a photo of the card holder, but not including a business card.
- A real estate tax bill or receipt for the current year or the year preceding the date of the election.
- A residential lease which is effective for a period that includes Election Day (not for first-time voters registering by mail).
- A gas, electric or telephone service statement (utility bill, not including a cell phone bill) for the period commencing not earlier than 90 days before Election Day.
- A bank statement.
- A paycheck.
- A check or other document issued by a unit of government.
- An affidavit on public or private social service agency letterhead identifying a homeless voter and describing the individual's residence for voting purposes.
Voters who have previously registered and voted in the City of Monroe and have not changed their name or address may simply report to their correct ward with no requirement to show any identification.
Please contact the City Clerk's office at (608) 329-2524 with any questions.
