MONROE - The City of Monroe Common Council convened Tuesday with newly-elected Mayor Bill Ross and two new aldermen on board.

Ross, Michael Boyce, Ward 3 alderman, and Mike Rivers, Ward 9, took their places along side re-elected Ward 1 Alderman Neal Hunter, Charles Koch (Ward 5) and Thurston Hanson (Ward 7) as City Clerk Carol Stamm administered their oaths of office.

The terms of the newly elected officers legally commenced at midnight.

The council elected Charles Koch, alderman for Ward 5, as the new council president.

In some of his first acts as mayor, Ross made his nominations and appointments to city committees and boards, which were unanimously confirmed by the council.

Ross also dissolved the Ad Hoc Building and Grounds Committee and authorized the continuation of the Ad Hoc Technology Committee. Ross said the Building and Grounds Committee was redundant, as department heads were responsible for maintenance of their buildings.

Also Tuesday, Ward 8 Alderman Dan Henke recognized outgoing mayor Ron Marsh and former aldermen Mark Coplien and Kent Kallembach for their service to the city.

Aldermen Paul Hannes (Ward 2), Jan Lefevre (Ward 4), Keith Ingwell (Ward 6), Charles Schuringa (Ward 10) and Henke continue their terms until the 2011 election.

In other appointments and elections, the Common Council:

• Elected Alderman Ingwell to serve on the Plan Commission.

• Elected Aldermen Hunter, Lefevre, Hanson and Rivers to serve on Board of Health. The board elected Hunter as chairman, Lefevre as secretary and Dr. John Frantz as Health Officer.

• Confirmed mayor's nomination of Hannes to Greenwood Cemetery Board.

• Appointed The Monroe Times as city's official newspaper.
