MONROE - Monroe Art Center begins its 37th season with two new gallery exhibits on display from Friday, Sept. 7 through Friday, Oct. 19.

The Frehner Gallery's "The Power of Place and the Significance of Home" exhibit features the photography of the late Susan Carr. Carr, of Chicago, died recently after being diagnosed with cancer this summer.

The 23nd Annual Photography Contest and Exhibit will also be on display in Wesley Hall. Gary Cialdella, a longtime associate of Carr's, will serve as judge.

An opening reception for both exhibits is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7. Cialdella will give a brief artist gallery talk at 5:30 p.m., and at 6 p.m., he will announce the winners of the 23rd annual photography contest. The event is free and open to the public.

The subject of Carr's exhibit is American residences which have been occupied by the same people for at least 40 years. She was moved to begin the work in 2000, after a visit to her aunt's home in Jackson, Miss., sparked the speculation that such unique personal spaces were becoming increasingly rare in the face of growing cultural homogeneity. Carr selected the span of 40 years as the minimum period to evidence a significant passage of time yet still allow enough subject matter to make the project viable.

Carr's photographs are included in corporate and private collections, including the Pfizer Corporation and the Museum of Contemporary Photography. Most recently, she was a past president of the American Society of Media Photographers and served as education director at ASMP. She was the editor of the ASMP Professional Business Practices in Photography publication, and author of her own book, "The Art and Business of Photography" released in February, 2011.

Corporate underwriter is Colony Brands, Inc.; season media underwriters are Monroe Publishing, LLC and Big Radio; and additional support is from Michael and Shelley Muranyi.
