MONROE - A New Glarus man was charged last week with his sixth drunk driving offense.

Mark A. Steiner, 57, was charged April 27 with a Class G felony count of sixth-offense driving while intoxicated after an incident on Wisconsin 69 in New Glarus on April 25.

According to a police report, a police officer pulled Steiner over after seeing that Steiner's vehicle had an expired registration. When speaking with Steiner, the officer realized that Steiner smelled strongly of alcohol.

Steiner claimed to have only had "a couple" of beers before driving; however, a preliminary breath test found a .126 blood alcohol content. After Steiner's five previous convictions, he is prohibited from driving with a blood alcohol content above .02.

Police also found an open, half-empty can of beer in Steiner's vehicle.

Steiner's previous convictions occurred in 1990, 1991, 1993, 1998 and, most recently, on June 21, 2014.

Steiner's preliminary hearing will take place June 12. His maximum possible sentence is five years in prison.
