NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus school board recently approved new course offerings for New Glarus High School for 2015-2016. These new courses move the district closer to the goal of all students being college and career ready by providing increased rigor and college-like experiences in a broad range of career fields, according to a district news release.

The first new class is called Human Body Systems. It is the second class in the Project Lead the Way Biomedical series. In this class, students learn by participating in a hands-on building of a human skeleton and organs, as well as using software to monitor human body functions. This class is the second in the strand and follows Principles of Biomedical Science.

New Glarus High School will also continue to expand its Computer Science pathway by piloting the second Project Lead the Way Computer Science course called Computer Science and Software Applications. In this class, students will learn about different platforms and networks, as well as mobile devices and Java. Students who participate in this class will be prepared to take the AP Computer Science course.

In an effort to provide a manufacturing experience to our trade and engineering students, New Glarus High School will be adding Computer Integrated Manufacturing. In this class, students will learn about manufacturing processes, robotics and automation. In this class, students can earn a virtual manufacturing badge, which is recognized by industry.

To strengthen the business offerings, Ag Marketing will be a new class offered next year. In this course, students will analyze consumer buying patterns, marketing techniques, ethics and product retailing. The class will also include advertising, sales promotion and public relations.

Currently, 89 percent of the 2015 graduating class will have experienced a college level experience while in high school. These experiences can be found in Advanced Placement classes, Project Lead The Way courses and dual credit classes with various colleges. The school's goal for the future is to have 100 percent of its graduates have a college level experience prior to graduation. With that goal in mind, there are several courses that will be new or updated dual credit courses with Madison College for next year. These include:

• English 12: This course will become Introduction to College Writing and Reading Strategies.

• Elementary Algebra: This course will be renewed so students can receive Madison College credit.

• College and Career Readiness: This course is new and will be the basis of a freshmen advisory program. Freshmen will have the opportunity to earn credit through Madison College right away in their high school career.
