MONROE - Thursday, July 1 through Saturday, August 28 the Monroe Art Center Frehner Gallery will present the exhibit "Worlds of Pattern: Painting and Sculpture" by Richard Moninski and Carole Spelic. These two Mineral Point artists explore the art of textiles in two very distinct ways.

Moninski is an oil painter whose work has been highly influenced by textiles. In the two-dimensional portion of this duo exhibit, Moninski will showcase his recent work, which was inspired by studying the folk textile heritage of the Scandinavian people.

Using photographs taken at folk museums in Norway, Moninski recreates in paint the fabrics, patterns, cross-stitch and beadwork of the objects. Through these paintings, he has tried to give a sense of the cloth as a physical entity with light playing across the surface. He rendered the artifacts as they were shown - with holes, stains, abrasions and unraveled threads. Moninski holds a masters degree in painting and has exhibited work throughout the East Coast and the Midwest.

Spelic is a paper mache artist who creates forms using found materials such as office paper, junk mail and reclaimed books. Her unique process incorporates a custom-developed mash recipe and repeated sandings to give vessel forms with a high sheen surface. The colorful patterns on these unique forms reflect her kayaker's interest with navigable lakes and streams, and her interest in obsolete writing systems. Spelic holds masters degrees in Drawing and Sculpture and has exhibited work throughout Wisconsin and the region.

An opening reception for this exhibit is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Monroe Arts Center Frehner Gallery. The artists will give a brief gallery talk beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The exhibit has been made possible by Monroe Arts Center Corporate Underwriter-The Swiss Colony, and Season Media Underwriters, Monroe Publishing and Big Radio. Additional support has been provided by Michael and Shelley Muranyi, Deb Thompson, Lee and Chris Knuteson, Barb Woodriff and Pete Guenther.
