MONROE - Monroe Arts Center is offering three new art classes to kick off the 2017-18 "Arts at MAC" season. Classes for both adults and children will be in September, October and November.
Participants in a one-day class can "Create a Nuno-Felt Scarf" of their own design from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Nuno felting is a process that felts wool fibers into a sheer fabric base, usually silk, producing a lightweight fabric with drape that is suitable for scarves, shawls or garments. The instructor will be Janis Merkle of Primrose Fabric Arts. The class fee is $75 plus a $25 supply fee, which includes the fabric and embellishment supplies. The registration deadline is Tuesday.
The first trimester of the "Afternoon Youth Art Class" from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on early-release Mondays will start Sept. 25. This six-week program for students in K through fifth grade provides lessons in various aspects of art and art techniques. First trimester classes include: What is Art?, The Dot, Abstract Wall Hangings, Art From India-Henna Hand Art, Australian Aboriginal Art, Exploring and Creating Different Mediums and Mexican Art. Art instructor Lisa Beach will guide students through each of the six projects. The fee for the entire six weeks of classes is $45 per student, with all supplies included. Registrations are being accepted through Tuesday.
"Mixed Media: Water-Based Painting" will be taught by Monroe artist Deborah Meyer. In this four-session class held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24, participants will be exploring a variety of techniques through the use of water-media, with a focus on color mixing and composition. Numerous demonstrations will assist participants on how to use the materials to their fullest potential. The fee is $100, and registrations must be made by Sept. 30.
All classes will take place at the Monroe Arts Center, 1315 11th St., Monroe. MAC members receive a 10 percent registration discount on adult classes.
