The Tom Carey Cheese Factory, located in Adams Township, was the location of Carl Marty's first cheesemaking job. Marty was the seventh born of 12 children, and his mother died when he was young. His father left the children in Switzerland and came to America, working as a cheesemaker in Ohio and then moving to Wisconsin. He found work in the Tom Carey factory and in trade for moving the younger children to America, the Martys were to work at the factory for two years. After those two years, Marty found work at the Bill Cary cheese factory as an independent cheesemaker.
