Crowds lined the streets and pigeons followed as the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad depot left its home of 105 years, making its way to the current location on the corner of Wisconsin 69 South and 21st Street. The depot is shown rounding the corner at the intersection of 14th Avenue and 19th Street. Pursuing a vision, members of Historic Monroe saved the depot after purchasing the structure for $1 from the Department of Transportation and $1 for the property from the City of Monroe. The depot now houses the National Historic Cheesemaking Center and the Green County Welcome Center. Volunteers welcomed visitors from 33 foreign countries and 49 states in 2014 and opened today for the 2015 season. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays.
