Pictured are employees of the Carl Marty Company, constructing Swiss cheese tubs. The tubs were used for
transporting and shipping wheel Swiss cheese. Constructed of basswood, staves were held in place by steel strapping and would usually hold four wheels and were occasionally constructed to hold a single wheel. The Beckman's Saw Mill provided staves for many companies. A scale board, a circle cut of paper-thin wood veneer, was placed between each wheel. A tub hook, one of which is on display at the National Historic Cheesemaking Center, was used to roll the tubs onto rail cars used by the Carl Marty Company for shipping their cheese across the country. On the left is W. Waffler. Center and right employees are unidentified. Questions or comments may be directed to Mary Ann Hanna at 608-325-4324 or nhcchistory@yahoo.com.
