Shown 80 years ago in 1936 are Christian Bernet, father of Werner Bernet; Werner Bernet; and Viktor Peir, at the Silver Lewis Cheese Factory, Monticello. Christian came to America in 1929, making cheese here at Silver Lewis from 1933-1939, followed by a return to Switzerland. The family returned in 1947, and due to poor health, Christian was unable to continue making cheese. However, Werner began apprenticing for Swiss cheese with Walter Schild at Valley, Juda, for one year and another year with Arnold Zumkher at Pleasant Valley. Werner and Martha then made cheese at the Stauffacher Factory in Dutch Hollow. Martha recalls raising two children and while assisting Werner in the factory, she would put a cheese lid in the bottom of a kettle covered with a quilt, acting as a playpen, and the children could be with them while making cheese. Taking their knowledge of good cheese, the couple then purchased and operated Bernet's Cheese and Sausage shop from 1958-1983. (Photo supplied by National Historic Cheesemaking Center)
