MONROE — Green County officials have released all the names of those involved in a pair of separate, fatal accidents over the past two weeks.
One incident was Green County’s first traffic fatality of 2025. On Friday, Jan. 17, at about 12:45 p.m., a two-vehicle crash was reported in the W7800 block of Wis. 81 in the Town of Jordan, about 7.5 miles northwest of Monroe.
“Preliminary investigation determined that a westbound sport utility vehicle operated by a 16-year-old male from Monroe failed to yield while making a left turn into a driveway, operating in the path of an eastbound car,” the Green County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
All vehicle occupants were transported to SSM Monroe Emergency Department. A 33-year-old passenger in the car was flown by Med Flight from SSM Monroe to UW Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The 16-year-old male driver of the SUV and the 71-year-old female driver of the car sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The fatality in the eastbound car was identified as Mckenzi Gabel, 33, of Mineral Point.
The 16-year-old male was cited for failure to yield while making a left turn and inattentive driving.
The passenger car sustained severe front-end damage, the airbags did deploy and both occupants were wearing seatbelts. The SUV sustained severe passenger side damage, the airbags did deploy and the occupant was wearing his seatbelt.
Wis. 81 was closed for about 1 ½ hours during the investigation. Browntown Fire Department, Monroe Rural Fire Department and Green County EMS responded to the incident.
The second crash came on Monday, Jan. 20 at about 9:38 a.m., with a 911 call reporting a two-vehicle crash in the N2200 block of Richland Road in the Town of Jefferson, about two miles east of Monroe.
“Preliminary investigation determined a semi tractor trailer unit was parked on Richland Road due to a mechanical problem. The semi unit had flasher lights activated,” said a sheriff’s office statement. “A northbound pickup truck collided with the semi-trailer.”
The pickup truck driver was identified as Randall Whitney, an 84-year-old rural Juda man who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at SSM Monroe Hospital. The operator of the semi unit was identified as 66-year-old Richard Waters of Waukee, Iowa, who was not injured. Both vehicles were towed.
