SPRING VALLEY TOWNSHIP - Grant J. Thostenson, 8, rural Brodhead, died Saturday night after being ejected from the utility vehicle he was driving, according the Rock County Coroner's office Monday.
Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a crash at about 8:02 p.m. Saturday in a farm field at 5746 S. Holden Road, according to a Rock County Sheriff's Department press release Sunday.
Emergency personnel arrived a few minutes later to find Thostenson unresponsive.
He had been operating a John Deere Gator off-road utility vehicle southeast of a field access lane when he lost control and failed to navigate a curve, according to an initial investigation, the release said. The utility vehicle rolled over and down a 6-foot berm. A man hired to work on the farm found Thostenson who was ejected and pinned underneath the vehicle.
The man and the Thostenson's father freed him and began to administer CPR. Once emergency personnel arrived, they continued CPR and began using an automatic external defibrillator. Thostenson was then transferred by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Janesville and was pronounced dead at 9:25 p.m.
Thostenson had operated the Gator several times in the past, but he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, the press release said.
