Mutual aid called for Brooklyn garage fire
News Brief with BKG

BROOKLYN — A fire in a detached garage at a Brooklyn residence Wednesday destroyed a vehicle inside, melted siding off the nearby house and shut down Wisconsin 92 for two and a half hours, according to Brooklyn authorities.

No one was hurt in the fire at 226 Church St., reported by a resident at about 1 p.m., said Wade Engelhart, village chief of police. The address is located in the Dane County portion of Brooklyn.

Damage to the garage was “extensive,” Engelhart said. “It was probably a total loss on the garage, and then there was some damage on the house.”

The Brooklyn Fire Department paged for mutual aid, with fire departments responding from New Glarus, Monticello, Albany, Verona, Fitchburg, Footville, Oregon, Evansville and Stoughton. The Green County Sheriff’s Office assisted with rerouting traffic.

The cause remains under investigation.

The fire started on the first floor of the two-and-a-half-story garage, destroyed a Chevy Tahoe SUV parked inside, and was moving toward the nearby house when firefighters extinguished it, according to Leif Spilde, assistant fire chief.

“It melted the siding off of their two-story house,” Spilde said. “Their house was damaged, but it’s still livable.”
