TOWN OF WASHINGTON - A collision between a motorcycle and a semitrailer along Wisconsin 69 near Gutzmer Road near Monticello resulted in one fatality Tuesday.
The southbound motorcyclist, Alvin J. Thomas, 54, of Mt. Horeb, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Green County Coroner's Office after being ejected from the bike.
Green County Sheriff Mark Rohloff said the accident occurred just before 6:29 a.m. Responding officers found the two vehicles had collided and the semi had rolled into the west ditch, spilling roughly 6,000 gallons of whey.
Spillage into nearby Burgy Creek was prevented by a quick-acting Monticello Fire Department, Rohloff said. Firefighters dammed the ditch with dirt before Washington Township workers laid gravel to reinforce the barrier. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officials on site cleared the area.
According to a news release from Rohloff, the truck driver, Randall A. Sager, 56, Rock City, Illinois, was extricated from the semi. He was transported by Green County EMS with non-life threatening injuries.
The cause of the accident has not been determined. Rohloff said reconstruction at the site should reveal what happened. Officials reopened the road just before noon Tuesday.
The accident is Green County's second fatal collision and its fourth fatality this year.
