DARLINGTON - A fire in Darlington this morning destroyed a home whose owner was on vacation at the time of the blaze.

Darlington Police Chief Jason King said this morning that officers, along with the Darlington Fire Department and Rural Medical Ambulance, responded to a report of a house fire around 1:30 a.m. at 454 Summit Ave.

King said a passerby saw smoke and flames coming from the house and contacted the police department. The owner of the house, Helen McDermott, was not home at the time of the fire. No one else was in the house, King said.

Firefighters were on the scene for about six hours.

The house was a total loss, King said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
