LAFAYETTE COUNTY - The Lafayette County Land Conservation Department hosted the 2015 Southwest Wisconsin Land Judging Contest on Oct. 22 at the Rick Althaus farm.
The event alternates between Grant, Green and Lafayette counties with FFA and 4-H students from area counties competing. There were 211 students from 12 schools with 60 teams participating at this year's contest.
In the competition, the students review four soil pits and evaluate soil properties, estimate slope, rank land classes and recommend conservation practices.
This was the first contest to use the new "Soil Study and Land Evaluation Handbook."
Jada Hicks from Shullsburg won the second-place award for individuals. Team award winners included Shullsburg Team One, which placed second, and Monticello Team Five, which placed fifth.
