original 1851 hotel was destroyed by fire in 1894. Construction was completed in 1896. The early hotel had large dining rooms, a bar, sleeping quarters and a large dance hall. The two-story brick building on the left, built in 1889, housed the Peoples Supply Co. general merchandise store. Other businesses in that block were Fessenden furniture store, Kundert restaurant, ice cream and soda parlor and Lengachers "Headquarters" tavern. The
