MONROE - A Monroe woman entered an 18-month deferred prosecution agreement Monday for an altercation involving her preteen son.

Shanelle Lynn Sanchez, 32, pleaded no contest to Class A misdemeanor counts of battery and intimidation of a victim, downgraded from the initial felony charges filed in May of child abuse and intimidation of a victim by use of force.

She is ordered to undergo counseling for domestic violence or anger management, pay the court a $243 fine and attend quarterly monitoring conferences. The charges will be dismissed if she complies with the agreement and doesn't commit any crimes in the next 18 months.

The case stems from an altercation May 11 at Sanchez's home in the 2400 block of 8th Street, after she asked her son to fold laundry.

When he told her no and called her names, she reportedly hit him about five times with a belt, and then held him down while punching him and wrestling a phone from him as he tried to call police.

The boy's sister videotaped part of the altercation with an iPad.

In a written statement filed with the court, the sister wrote that the incident "brought our family closer" and led to more communication between family members.

"I don't want my mom to get in trouble," she wrote.
