MONROE - The Monroe school district was recently named the top school in the "Million Pound Challenge" for kindergarten through 12th grade in the state and was awarded a first place plaque honoring the top school.
For every reported exercise hour 10 pounds of food, up to 1 million, is donated to the designated hunger-relief organization, Green County Food Pantry Inc.
Both students and staff participated in this community project through physical education classes and a staff wellness initiative. As a district, the total competition pounds for exercise equaled 939,572 pounds.
Samantha Kubly, school nurse for Monroe schools, tabulated exercise time from the various schools. This is the second straight year that Monroe was the number one school in the state.
