Monroe staff say farewell as they enter retirement

MONROE - School is out for the school year. But for more than 20 Monroe School District faculty and staff members, the final bell of the 2010-11 school year also marked their retirement.

The Monroe Times asked those retiring employees to reflect on their time in the district, and to provide a brief personality profile. Many replied to our query. Here's what they said:

•••

Terri Anderson

Taught: Kindergarten at Parkside

Years of Employment in the Monroe School District: 25 years

Age: 61

Education: University of Wisconsin-Stout in 1971 with a B.S. degree in Early Childhood Education.

Most memorable moment: "One of my favorite moments was last year when my oldest grandson, Brady, started kindergarten at Parkside. Even though he wasn't in my class, we would see each other every day. My second grandson, Christian, will start kindergarten this fall at Parkside and so now I will just be 'grandma' and can come visit and volunteer from time to time."

Least memorable moment: "My least favorite moment was years ago when a little boy asked me to make his Mom and Dad get back together. It was heartbreaking to hear the pain in his voice."

Why she likes the district and the community: "I like that our district tries hard to put the students first. Sometimes that is difficult with the economy and money issues but we are all here for the kids, to help them be the 'Best They Can Be' (that's a motto I've had in my room for year). Even though there have been challenging times in education, I wouldn't have traded this career for anything. It's been one of the most rewarding careers I think anyone can have; to open up the mind of a young child and watch all the learning happen. It's priceless."

Hobbies: Reading, cross-stitching (something I want to start doing again), trying new recipes, gardening (both flower and vegetable), playing cards, visiting friends and family, and a new hobby is biking.

Plans after retirement: I plan on doing more of all those hobbies. Plus, I love to putter; I won't wait for things to do. I also plan on doing some volunteer work once I have had enough time just to relax.

Family: My husband, Ed, daughter and son-in-law, Carrie and Tom Schuh and my three grandsons, Brady, Christian and Noah Schuh and my son and daughter-in-law, Jake and Sara Anderson. We have been very blessed.

Reason for teaching: I always loved working with young children, even when I was a child myself and I had some really wonderful teachers that I looked up to and admired along the way.

•••

Kim Cairy

Taught: Technology and engineering teacher at Monroe High School

Years of Employment in the Monroe School District: Since 1977

Age: 57

Education: "I received my bachelors degree in Industrial Education (now Technology and Engineering) from UW-Platteville in 1977, and my master's degree in general Education from UW-Platteville in 2004. I have also attended the U.S. Army Transportation Officer Basic Course, Engineer Officer Basic Course, Engineer Officer Advanced Course, Chemical Officer Advanced Course, Advanced Leadership Course, the and US Army Command and General Staff College."

Most/Least memorable moment: "There really is no part of my job that I have not enjoyed, other than like most jobs you have great days, good days and some that are not so good. I also enjoyed a 25-year career in the Wisconsin Army National Guard because I felt serving my state and nation was important as well."

Hobbies: "Enjoying my grandchildren, fishing, hunting, woodworking, and cabinetmaking which I plan on doing a lot of after retiring this June."

Family: I married my high school sweet heart, Mary Kay, and have been married for 36 years. We live in Monroe. We have two sons, Brian, and wife, Naomi, and Jeremy, and his wife Donna. I have two grandsons, Jeremy Jr., 4, and George, 1.

Reasons for teaching: "I chose Industrial Education because I have always enjoyed working with my hands. I wanted to pass on my knowledge to students and help them grow in their knowledge also. I enjoy working with young people."

•••

Karen Fowdy

Taught: German at Monroe High School and Monroe Middle School

Years of Employment in the Monroe School District: 24 years

Education: Bachelor of Arts: Colorado Women's College, Denver, Colorado; Post-graduate study: Freie Universität Berlin, Berlin, Germany; Master of Arts in German Literature: University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado; Secondary Teacher Certification: University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Colorado

Most memorable moment: "The countless memorable moments that spring to mind all include watching students gain insights, knowledge, or skills that I know will enrich their lives. They usually involve laughing and learning together with the students."

Least memorable moment: "I was very sad when the budget cuts meant cutting the French and Japanese programs. The opportunities for MHS students to learn about others in the world were greatly reduced."

Why she likes the district and the community: "This community was a wonderful place to raise our children. I have worked with dedicated students who have the good fortune to have the support of their families. The German and Swiss heritage of the community makes it a wonderful place to be a German teacher."

Plans after retirement: "I hope to spend more time with my parents and the rest of my family, to continue to present workshops for World Language teachers with my colleague, Lisa Hendrickson, to stay in touch with the school by substitute teaching, to volunteer in the community, to pursue my hobbies, and travel."

Family: "My husband, Mike, and I have been married for 37 years. We have three children: Michael, and his wife, Kate; Lara, and her husband, Matt; and Dan. Michael and Kate live in Milwaukee, and Lara, Matt, and Dan all live in Portland, Ore."

Awards: "Most recently, I was named Wisconsin World Languages Teacher of the Year in 2009, and Wisconsin Distinguished German Educator in 2010. The most personally meaningful award was the 2008-2009 Allan B. Holtshopple award from the School District of Monroe."

•••

Barb Grabow

Most memorable moment: "All those times when I experienced my students learning something new and being excited about it, telling me they love school, and that they like being in my classroom."

Least memorable moment: "When I was unable to help a child as much as I wanted to either academically or socially."

Why she likes the district and the community: "Although I grew up and attended schools in larger urban settings, I like the size of Monroe and its school system better. I was glad to be able to raise my children in a safe community and was fortunate to be able to teach here and follow my students through adulthood. I have been able to teach children and grandchildren of former students."

Hobbies: "Traveling, sewing, reading and, of course, spending time with my family."

Plans after retirement: "I plan to do more traveling, sewing, reading, spending more time with my family, and getting more involved with activities in our community. I will also stay involved with our union at both the state and national levels."

Family: "I have a son, Barry, who has a wife, Cindy (who is also a primary grade teacher) and two teen-age sons: Paul and Tony. I also have a daughter, Dina, who has two sons: Vinny, age 8, and Dominic, age 6."

•••

Loren Homb

Taught: Sixth grade at Monroe Middle School

Years of Employment in the Monroe School District: Taught in the district for the past 22 years.

Education: "BS degree in Broad Field Social Studies from UW-Platteville. I had a minor in Driver Education and later went back to become certified in elementary education grades 4 through 8."

Reason for retiring: "I lost a close friend last November and he always told me to retire when I can enjoy my life. After his sudden death I started thinking about all the talks we had over the years. I took his advice. I wish he was here so I could thank him and let his know that I was listening to him and very proudly am taking his advice."

Most memorable moment: "I do not have a most memorable moment. There are things that happen daily that just make me laugh. It is the students just being themselves. It is the student who is able to understand a new concept that we have been studying. It is the student finally taking an interest in reading and finding books that they really enjoy. It is the spontaneity that happens in the classroom. There are thousands of memorable moments."

Why they like the district and the community: "I like the warm feeling of the community. I like the friendships that I have made over the years. Growing up in southern Wisconsin I have always looked up to Monroe as a community of high standards. I am glad that I have had an opportunity to live and grow in this community. I cannot think of another community that I would rather call my home."

Hobbies: Golf, bicycling, motorcycling, refereeing, working with the Green County EMS

Words of advice to students after high school: "I hope that they remember to think for themselves. They all have great minds and the knowledge to go with it. I wish them the best of luck to dream and to work hard to try to make their dreams come true."

Reason for becoming a teacher: "I went into teaching because of another teacher. In high school I had a history teacher that I really enjoyed his classes. I think that he was the reason the I decided on education, also the fact that I enjoyed history at that time. Currently I concentrate mainly on science and I really have come to love that subject as well."

•••

Terry Hyland

Taught: Sixth grade at Monroe Middle School

Years of Employment in the Monroe School District: 36 years

Age: 66

Education: "I attended Green County Teachers College here in Monroe for two years receiving what amounted to a two-year certificate which allowed me to teach in a school district at that time in 1965. I then attended UW-Platteville where I received my bachelor's and master's degrees. At the time of my high school graduation, I did not know what I wanted to do so I chose to attend the county college right in my hometown."

Reason for retiring: "Due to the fact that I have taught a total of 46 years I felt it was the right time to retire."

Most memorable moment: "My most memorable moments are too many to mention but I have made so many friends through the various schools I have been at."

Least memorable moment: "Any least favorite moments are too few so I don't even keep them in my mind at all."

Plans after retirement: "My wife and I are both retiring at the same time so our first hobby so to speak is to do some work around the house that has not gotten done. In the fall we hope to travel west or east, sightseeing areas we had seen before but not under the relaxed conditions we would have now. Hobbies are not many but could develop into some later. Lindsay and I belong to our Monroe Optimist Club. We so enjoy the fellowship with so many good people who help the children of our community. This way both of us can continue working with the youth of Monroe. Hope to see a few more Brewer games."

Family: "I have been married to my wife Lindsay for 40 happy years now. We had two children, Joseph and Kathryn. Katie is married to John Rikli and they live in Sun Prairie. Our son, Jay, was just married to Amanda on May 13. We have one grandson, Joey, who is 2 1/2 years old."

About former students: "I have been around so long I now have been teaching many children of the parents I once taught. Many times I have had former students come back to see me and wonder if I am still teaching. To hear us referred to as freeloaders, thugs, and greedy people is heartbreaking."
