Monroe sets public hearing on 'fake' drugs ordinance

MONROE - The city will hold a public hearing June 16 regarding its ordinance on marijuana, synthetic cannabinoids and drug paraphernalia.

Monroe's Common Council voted unanimously Tuesday to hold the hearing after Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said he received numerous complaints from residents regarding the rise of "fake" drugs. The council plans to repeal and recreate the ordinance to bring into compliance with state statutes.

"There's complaints that a local business is selling it," he said.

Synthetic cannabinoids are considered "fake" drugs that are designed with complex chemical formulas to give users the effect as illegal drug. These drugs include Bath Salts, Ecstasy (or Molly), heroin and cocaine.

Kelley said this has been a shaky issue for not just the city but also the state because drug producers are always finding new ways to bypass any recent legislation by changing the chemical mix of the drugs.

"(Drug producers) are keeping up with the changing formulations," he said.
