The Cheesemakers play in the state semifinals Friday afternoon.

MIDDLETON - The Monroe High School girls basketball team will make the march to the state tournament for the first time in seven years after the Cheesemakers rolled to a 72-49 win over Milton Saturday to capture a WIAA Division 2 sectional championship.

Monroe sophomore Sydney Hilliard had a double-double, scoring a game-high 24 points to go along with 11 rebounds and five steals, to lead the Cheesemakers to the state tournament for the first time since 2010. That 2010 trip ended a three-year run of state tournament runs and included a Division 2 state championship in 2008.

"You really don't get these opportunities very often," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "I'm just proud that we were able to take advantage of this opportunity."

It marked the third time this season that Monroe (21-3), ranked eighth in the final Associated Press Division 2 state poll, defeated Milton.

Monroe advances to the Division 2 state semifinals where the Cheesemakers will get a rematch against top-ranked Beaver Dam (26-0) at 3:15 p.m. Friday at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

Beaver Dam knocked off the Cheesemakers 70-49 Dec. 10 in Monroe. Monroe is 4-3 against teams ranked in the top 10 in the state, including two wins over third-ranked Stoughton and one over Madison Edgewood, a Division 3 state qualifier. Monroe earned a Badger South Conference co-championship with Stoughton and Edgewood.

The other Division 2 state semifinal on Friday pits Hortonville (20-5) against Cudahy (19-7). The Division 2 state title game is slated for 6:35 p.m. Saturday.
