MONROE - Support staff and the Monroe school district have reached a tentative contract agreement for the 2008-09 and 2009-2010 school years.

Details of the contract, which was reached through consensus bargaining, will not be released until the Monroe Association of Support Staff union (MASS) and the school board ratify the agreement, Business Administrator Ron Olson said following the negotiations committee meeting Thursday evening. Ratification is expected to take place yet this month.

"I feel the negotiations went well and the consensus process works," Larry Eakins, chairman of the district's negotiations committee, said in a news release.

Denise Plantenberg, negotiations chairman for MASS, agreed. "Although the process may be lengthy, we are very satisfied with the outcome," she said in the same release.

Negotiations began in June, Olson said. Support staff has been working under the previous contract's term since it expired June 30.

The contract covers 145 full- and part-time employees, Olson said. Support staff includes classroom aides, food service workers and custodial staff.
