On Monday, Sept. 27, the Monroe school board:

Learned the Monroe Virtual High School won't hire a teacher to fill a vacancy. There are nine teachers at the virtual high school who work with 274 high school students and 42 middle school students. The teachers at the school said they would be willing to work with more students to help the district save money. Business administrator Ron Olson estimated the district could save about $60,000 in salary and benefits by not hiring another teacher at the virtual high school.

Accepted a $40,000 grant for the district's English Language Learning. The grant will allow the district to hire a part-time teacher to help students who are learning English. The teacher, who will work at Parkside Elementary School, will work three hours a day five days a week. The grant comes from the federal government and is awarded through the Cooperative Education Service Agency 5, a consortium of school districts in the state.

Accepted a $2,000 grant from the Berbee Foundation to purchase computer equipment for Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy that helps teachers determine how students are doing in the classroom. The students use the technology to answer questions about different subjects and the teachers are able to see the results almost instantly. The teachers can then decide if they need to spend more time on a specific area of instruction or move on to something else.

Approved the district safety plan as well as the student/parent handbook.
