On Monday, Oct. 11, the Monroe school board:
Heard a report on how student performance data can help the district identify students that are having trouble in class before the problems become too serious. Ed O'Connor of the Midwest Instructional Leadership Council told the board early detection can help teachers and students to collect student achievement data. The organization has worked with the school district, and other districts, to collect information about student tests in order to improve teaching methods. He said the goal of the data collection is to improve student achievement. "If we learn about a student who is having trouble we can intervene," he said. "We can address their problems."
Approved an English Language Learning program to help students in the district with their reading skills. The district needed to update its program in order to receive an $8,000 grant from Cooperative Educational Service Agency No. 5. The district will use the plan to help students who don't speak English as their primary language learn English. There are 57 students at Parkside Elementary School, 30 at the middle school and high school and a total of 130 students districtwide who don't speak English as their primary language.
Accepted a $300 donation from Monroe United Methodist Church to help needy students, and a $203 donation from Exhale Therapeutic Massage for middle school band shirts.
