MONROE - At a meeting Oct. 13, the Monroe school board:

• Recognized Kelley Baumann and Joel Frankford, both seniors at Monroe High School, for being selected as National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists. They were selected based on their PSAT exam scores.

• Heard that the school district released an app for Android and iOS devices that allows the user to view the information on the district's website. The application can be downloaded for free from iTunes or Google Play.

• Received an update on Link Crew at MHS. The program is intended to help freshmen transition to high school with the help of upperclassmen known as Link Leaders. Two Link Leaders spoke to the board of their experiences, giving positive reviews of the program and its impact on freshmen. One said she wished Link Crew was around when she was a freshman. Debbie Schmidt, an MHS counselor who provides leadership for the program, said they don't have formal statistics tracking student participation in organizations, but the presenters said they did see improvement in freshmen participation in homecoming week events.

• Hired support staff members: Derik Diemer and Laurie Crandall, both as custodians at Monroe Middle School.

• Hired instructional staff: Gail Eiserman, MHS family and consumer science teacher. Eiserman retired in spring of this year, but agreed to return temporarily because administrators couldn't find a replacement.

• Approved the request of one student to leave the Monroe school district.

Michael Boehme was absent.
