On Monday, March 9, the Monroe school board:

• Accepted a $700 donation from the Monroe Optimist Club for the Monroe Middle School Forensics Club. It also accepted a donation of $5,000 from the Monroe Optimist Club, Monroe Lion's Club, Swiss Colony, Woodford Bank and Monroe Clinic for the Monroe High School scoreboard.

• Accepted the retirement of Lee Binkley, fifth-grade teacher at Northside Elementary School.

• Approved the MHS Choir traveling to New York City to perform with composer and choral conductor John Rutter at Carnegie Hall next spring. The trip is planned for March 11-15. The school calendar is not yet set, but the dates may require students traveling to miss school. The choir went last year, and goes every other year, MHS Principal Mark Burandt said. About 20 students go on the trip. Superintendent Larry Brown supported allowing the trip, saying it was the only time the students could go. Students are responsible for paying their own way on the trip.
