On Monday, March 10, the Monroe School Board:

• Took no action on a request to waive the requirement for eighth-graders to attend school June 9 and 10. About 90 students, or half the class, will begin a trip to Washington D.C. June 9. School was scheduled to end Friday, June 6, but an unusual number of snow days pushed the last day of school to June 10. Monroe Middle School Principal Bill Van Meer and Assistant Principal Lynne Wheeler requested the waiver for eighth-graders not going on the trip. The eighth-grade class will have already concluded its end-of-year activities by that time, they said. District Administrator Larry Brown recommended the board take no action on the waiver, so eighth-graders will have classes those two days.

• Accepted retirements from Deb Kleppe, a third-grade teacher at Northside Elementary School; Mary Jelinek, an art teacher at Northside; and Joanne Bausman, a fourth-grade teacher at Northside.

• Hired Karen Pakes as an AV Center aide; Jill Sampson, an exceptional behavioral needs assistant at Northside; and Zona Schafer, an LMC aide at Northside.

• Approved final non-renewal notices for two Parkside teachers, Joanne Lancaster and Andrea Skalmoski. Both hold an emergency license to teach. The state Department of Public Instruction mandates contracts for teachers with emergency licenses not be renewed so the position can be reopened for applications. Both teachers are working on certification and can reapply for the positions.
